With the recent end of the Australian Open, The Santa Clara caught a bit of tennis fever. How could we not with the likes of Andy Roddick and Serena Williams running around on the court?

In honor of tennis season starting up again, TSC decided to catch up with the women's tennis team.

Sophomore Carmen Pham gave us the lowdown about how the season has gone so far and what the Broncos expect for the rest of the year.

TSC: Although the team is 1-2, you personally have been doing well. What do you attribute that to?

CP: My team pushes me to do better. Without them, I do not know what I would do.

In my last match, my teammate was the turning point. We were losing and I looked at her and she told me to keep fighting, and that was it for me, her backing me up.

TSC: You haven't played in a conference match yet, but earlier this year we met up with senior Stephanie Galainena, and she talked about how the team wanted to be ranked and do well in conference.

From what you have seen so far, what are the expectations now?

CP: We're a young team, but we're training hard and we're doing a lot better than we did last year, so I expect us to do well.

We found out that the doubles point is really crucial, so we're working really hard on our doubles matchups and seeing how we go from there.

TSC: What are the top three reasons why people should come see your matches this weekend against Sonoma State and University of the Pacific?

CP: Our first match, we're going to blow them away. They are a pretty easy team, so it's going to be a practice run for us.

Against the second team, it's going to be a tough match, so come and out have fun.

I know their team, and she (my opponent) is beatable.

The Broncos will play Sonoma State Friday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. and Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center.
